Analysts from Taiwan learned (figured out?), that TSMC has sent to the Apple trial batch of 5-nm chips, and that is – it’s the system-on-chip, which will appear in iPhone 12 in September of this year. The party is relatively small, but still, it’s not a couple dozen prototypes. We live in a transparent world – in the past years, as far as I know these events are not mentioned in the media.
Last year, Samsung Electronics, TSMC and Intel have made several high-profile and important statements. The world is on the verge of another breakthrough, the value of which cannot be overestimated. In February, TSMC announced that passes to the next development stage of the technological process of 5 nm FinFET using extreme ultraviolet testing and debugging of production lines. Small-scale production was to begin in may 2019. Samsung Electronics announced the rejection of a 4-nm process, due to the launch of the project on transition to 3-nm process.
The first chips produced with technology of 3-nm GAA, needs to go out in the second half of 2021. If you remember what Samsung technology deals with GAA since the beginning of the century, and the majority of inventions in this area was its staff, to doubt that they are right, no one came to mind. The project is very complex, on the very front edge and on the verge of failure, but Samsung is Samsung. Intel, not knowing that by the end of 2019 it is again the industry leader of semiconductors, has promised to begin mass production of chips for 5-nm process, passing the mark of 7 nm, and 2021 to conquer and 3 nm. Comment on the last statement, we will not.
Why you need a 5 nm process technology
A few months after the announcement of the beginning of the next stage of the development process 5 nm TSMC suddenly announced the change of plans. In 2020 there will be 5-nm chips instead of the stream will be delivered middleware technology, 6 nm. About TSMC announced in June-July, apparently with the production of the 5-nm chips something went very wrong, and overcome it could not. 5-nm chips were ready to move in 2021 or even later, behind Samsung Electronics. Worse than losing, in the world there is almost nothing.
The only thing worse is to release a frankly bad product and lose face. But at the end of the year TSMC suddenly forgot about 6 nm and spoke again about the release of the 5-nm chips in 2020, and here is the real evidence of this. I wonder if we’ll ever know what happened and how to TSMC in the second half of 2019? And Samsung, and TSMC, and almost all significant companies in Southeast Asia, no better than Apple during the Steve jobs and secrecy they still would be cleaner.
Therefore, the information about an unknown number know what chips that way, unknown to us (most likely a plane, but you never know), went from Hsinchu that Taiwan, in Cupertino, the United States, in California, we believe. And even the fact that it was 5-nm chips, moreover, this is a beta version of the very Apple A14, which will be inside the iPhone 12 in September 2020. Analysts are very profitable to go wrong in their forecasts, their prestige, and income of each error causes serious harm, so they are cautious, saying they can be trusted.
Interview with crystal ball one of the greatest visionaries of our day aroused considerable interest. After its publication, one media after another, at intervals of an hour and a half, articles began to appear that TMS sent Apple a trial batch of Apple A14 Bionic produced with technology of 5 nm, that Apple A14 Bionic will tear to shreds the 6 core processors in MacBook Pro that this SoC (system-on-chip) will leave far behind all competitors in single-core and multi-core tests, will break all records that the chip can accommodate one and a half times more transistors than it is now.
Perhaps that is the way it is. And so it has been in recent years, over and over again, September in September. Just as one season follows another. But they would not jinx it. And five nanometers and extreme ultraviolet radiation, and the architecture of processors and blocks with these chips – it is much more difficult, on the verge of possible and impossible. There are minor quibbles. Apple A13 architectural almost no different from Apple A12, they’re called Bionic because of this. Competitors have long been in Vogue more sophisticated architecture, which can be squeezed much more than that used Apple now – and it’s been quite some time that Apple rethink competitors and figured out how to use it. In 2020 Apple’s waiting for the feats, if she ever will release a system-on-chip with the same architecture (another Bionic, for example), they will have serious trouble. Market capitalization will collapse, and all that sort of thing. Apple A14, almost certainly, be named the Bionic will not.
