Graphics performance is perhaps one of the weaknesses of the MacBook Pro. In particular, this applies to models with integrated Intel graphics. Fortunately, this shortcoming is easy to fix – just buy an external graphics card (eGPU) and connect it to the laptop. But is the game worth the candle? To this question tried to answer the author of YouTube-channel Max Tech.
For testing the blogger purchased an external box Razer Core X Radeon RX Vega 64. All this he connected to his new MacBook Pro 13 (2019) in the youngest configuration — Intel Core i5-8257U with a frequency of 1.4 GHz, 8 GB of RAM and drive 128 GB.
For the author of the experiment we decided to test the graphics performance of the top-end version of the MacBook Pro 15. Intel Core i9-9980HK, 32 GB RAM, AMD Radeon Pro Vega 20 — in other words, the maximum possible configuration.

The first test is Unigine Heaven.
Built-in video card Intel Iris Graphics 645 showed a very weak result — 10.9 fps. But with connected eGPU performance has increased significantly. — 66.3 fps. But discrete accelerator MacBook Pro 15 showed himself not the best way — only 38 fps.
Second test — video rendering using BruceX Banchmark
And again, MacBook Pro 13 with eGPU emerged victorious in the test. The gap is not so big, but it is definitely there.
Third test — export video to 5K in H. 264
In this test, MacBook Pro 15 won with a substantial margin. It is remarkable, but the connected eGPU to the top-end version of the laptop did not give any positive effect.
Fourth test — Geekbench GPU
In the test for graphics performance MacBook Pro 13 scored just 49 377 points, with connected eGPU — 131 316 points. The result MacBook Pro 15 — 135 823 points.
As it turned out, plugged eGPU, indeed gives a significant performance boost, even in the case of the base configuration MacBook Pro 13. Alas, the 15-inch model proved to be not so good, showing comparable results only when working with video.
It is also worth noting that the price of the MacBook Pro 13 with an external graphics card is not even exceeds 180 thousand. While the top-end MacBook Pro 15 will have to pay for more than 300 thousand rubles. Is it worth paying more for compactness? Only you can decide.
