The fifth generation of Intel Core architecture introduced enlightened the public in the summer of 2013. In the same year when Haswell, the previous generation of this architecture conquered reality, affecting efficiency and unprecedented power of the integrated graphics. A new generation called Broadwell. In the United Kingdom and in the United States settlements with the same name dozens – but Intel officially announced what he had in mind: locality (145 inhabitants in 2010) in Logan County Illinois. In my opinion, such details had not been disclosed.

Why that Broadwell? Extra information is always cause too many questions. And Apple’s secrecy appeared to me in a different light. Secrets will save time.

Since Haswell, the method of “tik-Tok”, was the generation of “current” generation Broadwell could not be the generation “tick.” It was almost the same Haswell, only produced by the latest 14 nm technology. In 2013 – cutting edge science and technology.

The first of Broadwell in the hands of the inhabitants of planet Earth were to reach their most miniature and economical representatives who even designated otherwise. Core M. for the First time since the creation of the world (or the “big Bang”, which in this case is the same), Intel and Apple were direct competitors. Formally.

Core M TDP is 4.5 Watts intended for tablets (Microsoft Surface Pro used Intel processors) for small laptops, like no-other. Which only had to be invented. Core M was also a system-on-chip,more correctly they would be called “system-on-two-chips”.

Chipset with support services housed in a smaller sized chip next to the main chip, in which lived the CPU and GPU. In the main chip Core M was 1.5 billion transistors. For comparison, the Apple A8 there were 2 billion, and Apple A8X even 3. But in the Apple A8 and Apple A8X “chip sets” have been integrated into the main chip, because it was known beforehand what devices will be working. And in case of an emergency situation, Apple could make changes directly in them (this was done on the sly).

Core M was designed and produced for all. For computers, even for the small size and sealed like a good tablet, Apple ahh no good. And the idea of “re-invent the notebook” came the Apple taste. And in 2015… But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We are traveling in time, the indicator we 2014.

To compare Core M and Apple ahh incorrect, but when has that ever stopped us?

The familiar Core i3/i5/i7 and Xeon E3v4, Xeon, and Xeon E5v4 E7v4 expected later.

Core M vs Apple A8

Sorry for the incorrect comparison. As compensation, we will give the competitor a head start: it will not compare with the Apple A8X and A8.

What TDP (Thermal Design Power, “a measure of the withdrawal of some thermal capacity should be designed cooling system, for example, CPU”), the Apple A8 I don’t know. Neither the developer nor the manufacturer of the system-on-chip, the data is not published. No one ever allowed to use this product in their own development.

But TDP Core M was one of their most important marketing chips, Intel was required to tempt them as much as possible the number of developers “consumer electronics”, so the value of TDP reported: 4,5 Watt, or even a 3.5 at a reduced clock frequency.


The processors used in the MacBook Air with a diagonal of 11 inches 2014 was a TDP of 15 Watts. This data is an Intel Core i5 1.3 GHz (i5-4250U), used the cheapest, weakest and most economical configuration MBA April 2014.

In Core M was offered in three (and if you try, and four) times less likely to require the services of heat.

2 Cyclone or Typhoon (we know how they really called not to a greater extent than on the correctness of the names of the planets of the solar system, but who cares?) in the Apple A8, various devices, in 2014, speeding up to clock frequencies from 1.1 to 1.4 GHz. In 2015 and up to 1.5 GHz.

As Typhoon in the Apple A8, all of the first Core M were 2-core (but Hyper Threading artfully pretended to be 4-core). Core M inherited from previous generations and even feature Turbo Boost 2.0, advanced and very effective. When loaded was one of the of processor cores, the other is disconnected, and the clock frequency of the loaded kernel and its performance is automatically increased.

In processors with cores greater than two, Turbo Boost 2.0 worked on more complex circuit, and was engaged in all this a decent area of the chip.

From Typhoon ancestors were at times less, and the legacy was winning – no Hyper Threading, no Turbo Boost advanced analog processors Apple used.

The Debut Of Broadwell

The first three Core M processor, released September 2, 2014, were comparable. If you don’t consider the absence of Typhoon mode Turbo Boost 2.0:

— 5Y10, 800 MHz, Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 2.0 GHz;
— 5Y10a, 800 MHz, Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 2.0 GHz;
— 5Y70, 1,1 GHz, Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 2.6 GHz.

The graphics in both cases was integrated, and while the Intel HD Graphics not PowerVR GX6450 5300, Intel Core M 1.1 GHz (M-5Y70), for example, it was quite good.

Integrated graphics in the Broadwell – a separate issue. I note only that in the table of ranks of integrated graphics processors Broadwell Intel HD Graphics 5300 occupied the second place finish.

Apple A8 and Typhoon inside it (system-on-chip, is a “she”) was met with an ovation, for relics like the Typhoon, and claim them, as far as I know, was not.

The first three Core M is also greeted with applause, but tried to apply them almost immediately rained down on the press all physical forms frustrated cry. CPU performance was lower than expected. And what did they expect from a processor with a clock frequency of 800 MHz? And in addition, the processors fail, not kept promises of documentation and acting as a hit. The beta version?

All of the first Core M were sold at the same price 281 a buck apiece, while buying in batches of 1,000 or 10,000 pieces (alas, I do not know). All TDP Core M was also the same.

Typhoon have had no such problems: they are not sold, neither wholesale nor retail. In addition, manic pedantic (blissfully!) testing and debugging has borne fruit.

Apple, however, contacted Intel and took over the invention of the laptop. The first versions of it, too, was not satisfied, but Intel has promised compatibility in the following Core M devices which were used first.

January 2015

Very soon this information will be useful. Some of these processors that’s about to appear in Macs. Apple re-invent the laptop. More precisely, not even invented, and the resulting experiences.

In early January, Intel introduced a new modification of the Core M. All identified bugs have been fixed, the behavior of the processor is fixed (or, if otherwise was not possible, made adjustments to the documentation).

— 5Y71 1.2 GHz, Turbo Boost 2.0 to 2.9 GHz.

The cache of the third level in all Core M – 4 MB, Intel HD Graphics 5300, promised a 4.5 Watt TDP, now the new generation of Intel Core does come out in the light.
