December 19, 2013, almost six months after his demonstration, the Mac Pro from the future went on sale. The crowd hungry for “Apple” happiness does not hit the news, his success was as silent as he.

And what does “gunmetal”? The color of the actual professional of all artifacts from Apple was officially called “Space Gray” in the old days the so-called special bronze which was cast cannons. In my opinion, this translation is more beautiful than the “space gray.”

The success of new products was silent but palpable. For the first time in many years, the Mac has “not for everybody” was commercially successful. The plant in Austin, Texas, worked seven days a week for 24 hours to meet the demand, but buyers still had to wait for delivery.

The autopsy

In December 2013, the Australian company iFixit bought the cheapest Mac Pro to see what’s inside, and to determine its maintainability. The result of the autopsy was unexpected.

After opening the “patient” woke up and worked for a few years. But even this was not the most important discovery. Besides RAM and SSD-drive, which Apple was allowed to touch customers without the proper certificate, the client whose hands grow from where it could be exchanged and the fan and even the processor.

Changing the processor:

I know of several cases of replacement of 6-core Intel Xeon E5 10-nuclear: after heart transplantation, the Mac Pro was second only to its 12-core sibling. In all cases the operation was successful and without complications.

Theoretically, even the graphics card was replaceable,for a number of reasons, in practice this proved impossible. The circulation of the Mac Pro was quite decent for this class of computers, but the production of upgrades for them are independent companies recouped could not. Standard components do not fit.


Line Mac Pro 2013

In all cases line the same model ID: MacPro6,1. In variants of this model uses Ivy Bridge EP in different versions.

In the online store December 19, 2013 at 4 April 2017 model was introduced in two initial configurations, with 4 – and 6-core processors 2 and 3 999 999 dollars.

In both configurations, the processor installed in socket LGA 2011, and (officially) can be set up to 64 Gigabytes PC3-15000 (1866 MHz) DDR3 ECC SDRAM.

The role of the “bus” performed DMI2 with the capacity of 5 Gigatransfer per second.

Using memory modules of a different type (with lower clock frequency), its volume can be increased to 128 Gigabytes, and the gains from more memory exceeds the performance loss due to the lower frequency modules are the experimental data.

The two configurations were part of SSD-drive capacity of 256 Gigabytes. In fact it is flash memory on a separate Board connected with the system through a PCIe SSD. Disk capacity can be increased in the Configurator, up to 512 GB for $ 200 or 1 Terabyte for $ 600.

One HDMI port (the 1.4 UltraHD), six ports Thunderbolt 2, four USB 3.0 ports.

Two independent Gigabit Ethernet connector. 802.11 ac (what is sometimes unfairly called “wireless Ethernet”) and Bluetooth 4.0. Nothing out of the ordinary, but it is worthy.

The CPU and memory

Initial configurations have two, but they differed from one another by modification of the Central and graphics processors and amounts of RAM.

GPUs we’ll discuss in the next section.

In a 4-core version MacPro6,1 used Intel Xeon 3.7 GHz (E5-1620v2), 10 MB cache in the third level, with a max dynamic clock speed of 3.9 GHz.

In the Configurator, the processor can be replaced by 6-core ($500), 8-core ($2,000) or 12-core ($3,500).

As part of your initial 4-core configuration installed 12 GB of RAM. Three modules PC3-15000 (1866 MHz) DDR3 ECC SDRAM, 4 GB, in three of the four slots.

6-core option was used in Intel Xeon 3.5 GHz (E5-1650v2), with 12 MB cache in the third level, with a max dynamic clock speed of 3.9 GHz.

Changing the processor on the 8-core was worth $ 1,500 on the 12-core is $ 3,000.

16 Gigabytes of RAM (all 4 slots are occupied).

The 8-core option in the Configurator MacPro6,1 is a Intel Xeon 3.0 GHz (E5-1680v2), 25 MB cache in the third level and the max dynamic clock speed of 3.9 GHz.

If you notice that Turbo Boost 2 all three processors are the same clock frequency, can check: this is not a typo. It was.

12-core Intel Xeon 2.7 GHz (E5-2699v2), with a 30 MB cache in the third level, with a max dynamic clock speed of 3.5 GHz.


The Mac Pro used AMD FirePro D300/D500/D700. In 2013, core these processors (which Apple’s marketing service called new) were already last year. Part 4-core initial configuration (2 for $ 999) consisted of two GPU AMD FirePro D300. For $ 400 they can be replaced with the pair of AMD FirePro D500, for $ 1,000 – two AMD FirePro D700
