Rumors that Apple is going to move their Macs to the ARM architecture WebKit. We have already considered the advantages of such a solution in this article, and now it’s time to talk about the disadvantages. According to the authoritative analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, the transition to a new architecture should take place in the 2020-2021 year. Up to this point, the Apple engineers have several fundamental problems, namely:
- Compatibility with current programs. This is perhaps the most important point. To doubt that Apple adapts the embedded applications for ARM is not necessary, but would it be to do third-party developers. May be a special translator teams, as in the case of the transition from PowerPC processors to Intel. But this is not a solution — because then the performance of programs and games written for the x86 architecture that significantly reduces.
- BootCamp. The transition to ARM in this case can only mean one thing users will lose the ability to install and use the operating system Windows. Yes, Microsoft is developing a special adapted version for mobile architecture. But as shown by the first tests, the idea is not yet justified — the applications are running very slowly, and is supported by far not the whole list of programs.
- Performance in demanding tasks. Despite the fact that mobile chips Apple are breaking records in speed, in some calculations, they are still much inferior to x86 processors. This means that to install the mobile chips in these computers like the Mac Pro and iMac Pro will be a long time is impractical.
Despite these challenges, the transition to ARM still bears more advantages than disadvantages. But Apple should definitely think about how with the least losses (for themselves and for users) to solve the above shortcomings.
