iMac Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn was announced on Monday, 28 April 2008. Omen, like expected, once again confirmed the wisdom of the ancients: a new model iMac, waited a fantastic success. And Apple is increasingly ignored tradition. When the company has 4 product (Mac, iPod, iPhone and Apple TV), no time for nonsense. However, while they were 3. Apple TV “start” failed. Time Capsule (allegedly) sold better. Comparable. Five days before the announcement of the new iMac, the company reported the results of the next quarter, the second quarter of 2008 fiscal year, or first calendar. Gifts were bought, the holidays have passed, the money spent… Sales are down, there comes a lull.
By the way, the results were announced too, not Tuesday – Friday.
Compared to the same quarter of 2007, profit increased by 43% to 7.51 billion. Increased net income from 770 million to one billion and 50 million. Sales volume was impressive.
2 289 thousand Macs 10 644 thousand iPods and 1 703 thousand iPhones. Data on the number of sold Apple TV (a fourth major product) was not reported.
The results of the second fiscal quarter was worse than the results of the festive, when the profit reached 9.6 billion and net income of 1.58 billion. Sold 2 319 thousand Macs 22 121 thousands of iPods and 2,315 thousand iPhones.
“Sales of the iPhone’s down!” – told the media – “not Apple to sell 11 million iPhones before the end of the year!”. And then I expressed what I thought: it’s not even a smartphone, just a misunderstanding, it does not support 3G, not a competitor to the BlackBerry, and the price! Its design is stupid, and claim to be the gaming platform at all ridiculous…
Without the extreme
In the iMac model ID iMac8,1 was used four versions of Intel Core 2 Duo “Penryn”. For each of them on display online store put up a separate configuration. No “extreme” underground version did not.
In some of the configurations present the option “select CPU” – offered the most- – but not for retail Apple Store or an authorized dealer for any “synthetic” configuration not think I had.
In addition, iMac officially recognized belonging to the class of “prosumer”, class household (consumer) and professional computers. What and where took – we (the users) are not particularly interesting – but the configurations and in fact become “more professional”.
Common to all iMac8,1
All new iMac’Ah was Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn, cache second level 6 MB, produced by technology 45 nm, more efficient, to overclock to higher clock rates without risking overheating the computer.
The clock frequency of frontal system bus – 1 066 MHz, EFI, 64 – bit, memory almost like a Mac Pro – PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM (SO-DIMM, 800 MHz).
Traditionally, the maximum amount of RAM by Apple was 4 GB. In fact, with minimal risk, its volume was increased to 6 Gigabytes.
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, integrated AirPort Extreme with 802.11 n (without the extreme still did not work, but in the name of the previous section I was referring to the other extreme).
In all variants – 8x DL SuperDrive, the same as in the previous model.
SATA II with data transfer rate at 3.0 GB/s.
In all variants except the top – the same GPUs as before, with the same amount of video memory (GDDR3 SDRAM), but in the most expensive option, according to Apple, “the latest and most powerful graphics processor from NVIDIA.”
They’re about the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS with 512 Megabytes of GDDR3 SDRAM. Apple, in conjunction with NVIDIA, working on yet another secret project – a side effect?
The connectors are the same as the previous model: the body three USB 2.0 ports, two on the keyboard. FW 400 and FW 800. Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T.
The iSight camera. Apple Remote included in the package. High-quality sound.
Screens and support for external monitor – the same as in previous models.
Came with iMac OS 10.5.2 “Leopard” supports special efforts to develop versions of Mac OS X up to Mac OS 10.11.x “El Capitan”. Part of Mac OS X, starting with 10.5, was part of Boot Camp (the utility facilitates the installation of Windows, to go to which required a restart of the computer), using third-party tools virtualization Windows and Mac OS X can be used in parallel.
iMac8,1 has worked with all 32-bit versions of Windows from XP SP2 to Windows 7 – a copy of Windows had to buy separately in the online Apple store didn’t sell one.
Variants of the basic configuration iMac8,1 was four years shown in brackets as they will be referred to in the text:
20-inch c Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz (E8135), for 1 $ 199 (20/2,4);
20-inch Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz (E8335), 1 for $ 499 (20/2,66);
24-inch Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz (E8235), 1 799 $ (24/2,8);
24-inch Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz (E8435), 2 $ 199 (24/3,06).
For 1 $ 199 (in the US, without taxes and fees – the real price is higher) you could buy a workable computer with a premium appearance, though something in his configuration cost to change.
The kit 20/2,4 consisted of only 1 Gigabyte of RAM. For normal operation of Mac OS 10.5 that was not enough – but in the online store memory can be increased to 2 or 4 Gigabytes, at their own expense.
The kit includes the drive capacity of 250 GB (7 200 rpm), in the list of options had discs in 320, 500 GB and 1 Terabyte, with the same frequency of rotation of the rotor.
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 GB GDDR3 SDRAM.
In the 32-bit benchmarks Geekbench 2 option 3 scored 334 points, in 64-bit – 3 705. The most affordable version of the previous model scored 2 and 3 731 086: productivity growth for 22 and 20 percent! In a press release from Apple about this word.
Complete 20/2,66, 2 Gigabytes of RAM, the drive capacity of 320 GB (7 200 rpm), ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM. In the list of options drives in 500 GB and 1 TB and 4 GB of RAM instead of 2.
Geekbench 2, 32-bit tests, option 3 scored 668 points in the 64-bit – 4 080 and equal status of available models – 3 216 3 595. Performance increased by 14%, the same in 32 – and 64-bit tests.
24/2,8 – includes 2 Gigabytes of RAM, disk 320 GB (7 200 rpm), the same graphics processor as in 20/2,66 (ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO) with the same 256 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM. In the list of options offered by the same drives and the same upgrades RAM for 20/2,66 – and besides that, Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz (E8235) can be replaced by Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz (E8435), for just $ 200.
Geekbench 2, 32-bit tests, option 3 scored 833 points, in 64-bit – 4 284, its counterpart (the cheapest 24-inch version) – 3 216 3 595 points. An increase of 19%.
Replacement E8235 on E8435 did the option equal to the option 24/3,06 in performance, but the main feature of 24/3,06 was his GPU.
Complete 24/3,06, 2 Gigabytes of RAM, disk 500 GB (7 200 rpm), NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS with 512 MB GDDR3 SDRAM – I heard a lot about it (like praise), but he never tried.
Geekbench 2, 32-bit tests, 24/3,06 and 24/2,8 after replacing the CPU E8435 4 scored 113 points in a 64-bit – 4 602. Appropriate 24/3,06 on the status of available models (“extreme”) scored 3, and 703 4 117. The performance gain on 11 and 12 percent.
Even 20/2,4 is ideally suited for software development for the iPhone and Pro 24/3,06 and say nothing, but everywhere where I worked 24/2,8 and 24/3,06 was the designers.
This iMac I almost bought. I chose 20/2,66, with 4 Gigabytes of RAM and a disk of 1 Terabyte. Friends at Apple would have bought it from the nominal discount, and I would have brought it with me on the road to Moscow (I would need “clearing”). But all this had to be postponed for the autumn, and in autumn I was not up to the iMac…
