In September 2008, the traditional “music event”, was submitted to iPhone OS 2.1, the new generation of several models of iPod (including iPod touch was), iTunes 8, Genius and a little music at the end. In 2008, Steve made a lot of mistakes. He was in a hurry. He was sure that if he ceases to understand all of the details of important projects, they fail, and to secure for the Apple market position was far away. But the forces were not the same, and several such projects have failed – and the same MobileMe “cloud iWork” required additional time for testing and debugging.

As in 2003-2004, he postponed the treatment, trying to do everything. Has done a lot. He was lucky: he had time to finish the job. But more on that another time…

He looked bad. He even diagnosed “on photography”, predicted that in a month, at best two, it’s all over. Shareholders (very nervous creatures and their investments depend on the well-being of the company, as it directly depends on the welfare of its charismatic head) accused him of unethical behavior, considering that he has no right to hide the truth from them.

Finally one newspaper has published a message about his death. According to the inscription on the gravestone, it was a joke, but the news was immediately reprinted by others… without pictures, can be especially. Sensation!

And now, September 8, 2008 thin, but cheerful and happy life Steve opening Apple Music Event statement “the rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated”. The applause and laughter. If you imagine what it all cost him, is not funny. But the press service of Apple was professionally fulfill the demand of Steve, and no one even could not imagine how everything is hanging “by a thread”.

iPhone OS 2.1 was no longer beta. But in the beginning I was not referring to her…

This is the sixth part of a series about iPhone and the like, the previous parts are here:

First part: MacWorld Expo 2007;
The second part: Touch interface comes to iPod;
Third part: the iPhone for enterprise iPhone SDK and App Store;
The fourth part: the Leopard moved to the iPhone.
Fifth part: Next step: iPhone 3G, iPhone OS 2.0, and much more.

Another mistake of Steve

To access the iPhone section of the site developer.apple.com where you can download Xcode and the official SDK, was required to apply for a free subscription. On the other side was checking something out and after some time, usually granted access to the section.

I have not heard of a single case of refusal to anyone in the subscription, but formality is not. To sign up, it was necessary “to sign a” commitment “not to divulge information about the SDK, not to discuss the issues associated with the SDK in blogs, on public sites, forums, print media, and anywhere in public space.” In fact, it was a non-disclosure agreement. A test was needed, rather, to confirm the seriousness of signed commitments.

I do not remember exactly, whether free subscribers access to the beta versions of iPhone OS 2.1 (I think, right to access to beta versions was one of the privileges of members of the iPhone Developer Program, I was), but the commitment was signed by all.

Imagine: a new operating system and new SDK, imperfect and incomplete documentation, bugs and problems, just puzzles – which is usually addressed by the developer?

This prohibition greatly hindered.

And not only to developers – because it was not produced in print dozens of books about the iPhone OS SDK. Publishers consulted with lawyers and found out even though the singularity and the mass of non-proliferation agreements, the signatory in case of violation can be prosecuted.

Steve wrote a petition… But it was not before.

The authors and the developers were sympathetic to the requirement to keep confidential the features of the beta versions, but the rest was clearly harmful.

Information about the beta versions, however, penetrated into the media. Push notifications, which were presented at WWDC, as anto parallel processes were in the first and second bet, not worked. From the third beta they disappeared. The release of iPhone OS 2.1, they were not. No-one was hurt.

Limitations with free subscribers were removed. It seems in December. The petition, apparently, reached.

No longer a beta version…

David Pogue, who called the iPhone a major computer platforms (Windows, Mac OS X and iPhone OS 2.0), testing iPhone OS 2.1 after its release, announced that all previous versions of the iPhone was a beta version of the iPhone OS – and this is not beta, it is real and a real iPhone OS.

Hang-UPS, bugs, emergency shutdown systems and other problems, which in iPhone OS 2.0 was an incredible number, have been eliminated.

The execution speed of many operations has increased significantly. iPhone OS 2.1 was more stable and predupredila predecessor. Minute delay at around 95% when you download purchased App Store app is gone. And the upload itself is faster and a half times.

It 8 September 2008 it would be correct to assume the date of birth of the iPhone OS (nowadays iOS).

Live operating system may not be perfect: in iPhone OS 2.1 preserved some of the old “sores”, and there are new – but now it was in the bounds of decency.

iPod touch second generation

To summarize the video, I will not: better than the jobs will fail.

Here’s a snippet of that presentation (duration 00:18:23):

I will write only about that, about what he said.

iPod touch (2G) is supplied not with iPhone OS 2.1. And with iPhone OS 2.1.1.

And attempts to upgrade the first iPod touch models with iPhone OS 2.0.x to iPhone OS 2.1, iTunes in the early days ended in nothing. The problem was resolved after two or three days.

The model ID iPod touch (2G) was iPod2,1. And yet he had the slogan “The funnest iPod ever”. “The most fun of all iPods”. If you don’t like the translation, tell me.

And, for the first time since the beginning of the epic, iPod touch (2G) has been increased processor frequency (all the same ARM1176JZ(F)-S, with a nominal frequency of 620 MHz), from 412 to 532 MHz.

That made it noticeably more nimble than the iPhone 3G.

According to unconfirmed data, ARM1176JZ(F)-S v1.0 in iPod touch (2G) was replaced by the ARM1176JZ(F)-S v4.0.

In addition, with the opening in the 2G found “contraband” BCP4325 Broadcom chip, support Bluetooth. About it said at the presentation, except indirectly: otherwise, neither of which support iPod+Nike’s speech could not go.

Other

About iTunes 8, with Genius about this very feature, about a small upgrade iPod Classic about the iPod nano (4G) here.

(Duration 01:04:28):

By the way, on the same day, the iPod shuffle is also repainted in the new bright colors is what was said, and I say nothing.
