Next step: iPhone 3G, iPhone OS 2.0, and much more…

25.12.2018 - Apple, iOS, iPhone, WWDC
Next step: iPhone 3G, iPhone OS 2.0, and much more…

This was the most memorable and eventful WWDC opening in their history. Although not all of the promised that day came true and price reduction on the iPhone was almost a deception, the result was achieved: by the end of 2008, 1% of the mobile phone market was Apple. Irresponsible promise of the adventurer was made. To take one percent of the global smartphone market in 2008, Apple had to sell about 11 million iPhones. By June 9 they had sold only 6 million, and sales began to decline. In the second calendar quarter of 2008 they had sold 717 thousand. Less than a million units in three months, for the first time in the campaign.

the iPhone was still fashionable and prestigious gadget, but fashion is changeable – from a practical point of view, despite all its advantages, to replace traditional smartphones, he could not. Apparently all was well: second place in the American smartphone market, from the leader of the gap is small, only…

There were many errors – Apple in this market had no experience – but the competitors were happy too early. You learn from mistakes. In March, declaring SDK “narrow circle”, Apple has taken a step towards business America – and was heard.

As a well-known computer writer and journalist David Pogue, from that moment the world had three major computer platforms: Windows, Mac OS X and iPhone. And even in that time, iPhone OS was not yet a reality, the stated directions of its development and examples of native applications did the trick.

All that was promised corporate America, was implemented in iPhone OS 2.0. And almost without problems. MS Exchange, Active Link, VPN… the IT departments of large corporations has brought it all to Shine.

At WWDC 2008 big corporations (with a staff of 500 or more employees) were offered special conditions for the development and distribution of enterprise apps – I was not able to try this software to “taste”, so to talk about it will not. I note only that this area has become one of the most successful for Apple. What you failed to achieve Mac OS X, iPhone and its operating system is achieved effortlessly.

Press conference on the opening of WWDC 2008, as a whole, including the fragment with the announcement of the iPhone 3G, we bring to your attention the section about the new phone.

(Video duration 01:43:58):

But with the “Exchange for all” (MobileMe and iWork.com) something went wrong…

This is the fourth part of a series about iPhone and the like, the previous parts are here:

First part: MacWorld Expo 2007;
The second part: Touch interface comes to iPod;
Third part: the iPhone for enterprise iPhone SDK and App Store;
The fourth part: the Leopard moved to the iPhone.

iPhone OS 2.0

Anonymity was over. What used to be called “OS X”, referring to a real Mac OS X – what was the truth, turned into iPhone OS. In October 2007 Steve promised open SDK, but to open the inning. The fact that there was effectively only work Apple engineers have access to the source code that was aware of the restrictions.

And restrictions was very high. They were annoying, puzzling, habits acquired in Mac OS X and other operating systems have not worked.

What are, at least, the permission used are only described in the documentation of Apple’s APIs, a ban on the use (in any form) of concurrent processes that are hard (even violent) control of all these upon acceptance of programs in the App Store.

The quality of the documentation was not very good, to use it was uncomfortable: someone in the company is very much afraid that competitors will steal her ideas and cause her damage. This prevented that honest wrote software for the iPhone, and competitors still learned all that they were interested in.

There were many difficulties, but…

The main thing in iPhone OS 2.0 was to transform the phone operating system in computer platform. The popularity of Objective-C grew rapidly. I enjoyed it – I was sure that interest in Mac OS X programmers also grow. I was wrong, and David Pogue, too.

The list of major computer platforms, in the order of their importance, it soon looked like this: Windows, iPhone OS, Android, Mac OS X.

iPhone 3G

The presentation of the iPhone 3G (the duration – 00:21:10)

This is the movie clip link in the beginning of the article.

Retell the roller will not. I note several points that are not obvious.

In fact, it was the same the first iPhone, only the new building, black and white plastic. The same processor with a nominal clock frequency of 620 MHz, that is to reduce power consumption and heat dissipation had to be reduced to 412 MHz, the same cruel (to a programmer) RAM (128 MB!), half of which was moving the operating system, the same 8 or 16 GB of permanent memory.

One important difference is the 3G support – was underscored in the model name. This was a major demand of the consumers. Greedy cell radio resources of the first iPhone gave way to an even more voracious, and the battery life of the phone even increased (at least officially).

If you do everything right. I knew a thousand and one ways to drain the battery to “zero” for 15-20 minutes using the built-in system programs. Programmatically this can be achieved even faster.

From a hardware point of view, it was the same “first iPhone”, but it was quite different smartphones, now really worthy of the name – because of the iPhone OS.

Steve, the most honest, announced the reduction of prices. iPhone 3G 8 GB cost $ 199 (compared to $ 399 with the first iPhone), 16 GB 299.

In the list of options – two black iPhone 3G (8 and 16GB) and one white (16 GB). MacBook Vice versa? Premium white iPhone 3G cost the same $ 299. And they will be delivered first in 22 countries, until the end of 2008 the number of countries covered will bring up to 70… of the Russian Federation the list of these 70 were not.

Actually, the 199 and 299, that’s true. But not all.

This is the price in the United States, other countries prices and conditions are different. As much (plus taxes and fees) used for iPhone 3G, if at the same time it was purchased 2-year contract for the services of mobile operator AT&T (former Cingular). With a monthly payment for his services. AT&T was the only operator, with whom Apple had an agreement. The rates were a monopoly, with all the…

In the end, the iPhone cost to customers in the immeasurably greater amount than 199 or $ 299.

And if the buyer already had a contract with AT&T, which was interrupted when buying a new unit, the customer has to pay 399 and 499 dollars on the same terms.

After some time, iPhone 3G was allowed to sell without reference to the operator. For 599 and $ 699. That is, iPhone 8 GB fell from $ 399 to 599.

But despite all this, iPhones was sold like a cold soda on a hot day.

Exchange for all

By these projects to do I never had a chance, but with both companies thing to have had.

About the first of the companies (280 North), its framework Cappuccino and Objective-J can be read in the previous part. Steve jobs talked with Francisco about the application of his developments in the project Apple, taking a subscription about nondisclosure. To learn more failed. 280 North was confident that they are steeper the second… and that multimillion-dollar contract already in their pocket.

The name of the second is unknown to me, her head was my buddy. Second, the company has developed SproutCore, the JavaScript framework, compact, and very effective. For the implementation of the plan Charles Jolly with a few friends at the University he founded in Prague (at that time it was cheaper, the cost of living is lower than in the US, and just fun), and for several months worked for 12-18 hours a day, and on weekends drinking beer in Prague beer.

Also meeting with Steve, is also a subscription about nondisclosure – Steve prefer SproutCore.

Steve had serious health problems, and a lot of the tasks of paramount importance. He was not able to closely monitor the development of MobileMe and iWork.com when Charles tried to convince him to wait with the release of the project, Steve was not in the mood, went to the principle and…

MobileMe, in fact, failed. iWork.com, by the way, worked perfectly – I used it, a small Burr was – but it was a beta version, which no one did.

Neither before nor after, about JavaScript frameworks aimed at the emulation environment of Mac OS X on the web I have not heard. It would be possible to dream up on this subject, saying that one day Steve, a secret…

But I won’t.
