Dreams of a PowerBook and iBook G5 is reaching manic-depressive phases, in June 2005 turned to dust. Bravely (adventurous?) breaking with the past, Apple has dealt a devastating blow to the recent friends and allies… But this time we are only talking about the last two models of the iBook G4 released in October 2004 and in July 2005. Before and after the abdication of Apple from PowerPC…
We talk about the sad and terrible event: in July 2005 was the last one in the history of Apple model iBook. Computers with the same name Apple is no longer produced, and hardly do it in the future: name, in the form of iBooks, busy. This program iBooks (first published on the iPad in 2010), the iBookStore, and the like.
the iBookStore is one of the innocent victims of industrial designers, who rashly commissioned to do user interface mobile operating systems. In this experiment the popularity of iBooks has fallen to almost zero, the program has made systematic and neodoljive to save her from the shame…
Remember iOS 7?
About the sad and terrible events I was joking. What used to be called the iBook G4, changing the name and going to another (new) the processor well exist in 2018. There are rumors that iPad’s going to kill Mac and but optimistic guess: we’ll live. Or will live – but not all.
Let’s go back to iBook G4.
This is the third and last part of the series about the iBook G4, a list of the previous parts below:
October 2004, or iBook G4 (Late 2004)
It was a common (in those days) update, they even called a short word of two parts, a “speed-bump”. Pretty clever: in colloquial American language of the so-called speed bumps. Nothing major, just slightly increased clock frequency of the processors (of the same), and with it performance.
Such a nice little thing. When such updates occur every six months, spring and autumn, people begin to perceive them as seasonal weather phenomena. And to understand all charm of these seasonal phenomena, they need to lose.
This time on stories about speed-bump happened with the iBook G4 do not even have to spend a page in the print media, sensibly deciding that those who are interested can go to the online Apple store, and the rest is uninteresting. In October 2004, intervened another factor: a week after the announcement of the new iBook (19 October), Apple has presented the second generation iPod Photo, and iPod (U2 Special Edition), which eclipsed iBook’and as the sun outshines the stars…
But it was a very decent machine, October 19, 2004, they became better, and it’s time to remember them.
To replace the three variants of the model ID PowerBook6,5 (iBook G4/1.0 12 – inch and 14-inch screens and iBook G4/1.2 14-inch) came two new variants of the same model (iBook G4/1.2 12-inch and iBook G4/1,33 with 14-inch screens).
In the new variants, PowerBook6,5 we used the same modification of the PowerPC G4 as before (PPC 7447a), with the second level cache to 512K, with a clock frequency of frontal system bus is 133 MHz and the same type of RAM (PC2100 DDR SDRAM SO-DIMM).
As before, all the household notebook on the external monitor supports only the display mode of the same picture as on the main screen, regardless of screen size diagonally they had the same resolution: 1024×768, as on the embedded and connected screens. Those who really want more, let them buy more expensive and powerful PowerBook’I.
However, few of the users iBook G4, to prevent artificial lock mode extending the desktop, it was enough to visit one of the forums of their comrades in misfortune. The solution does not require any sleight of hand, no screwdriver is needed to fix the Firmware script, and change the settings in one of the plist files of the system.
All options on the motherboard was soldered 256 MB of RAM, which memory Bank was a virgin empty. At the time of ordering (or later) memory it was fashionable to increase to 1.25 GB.
Graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 (4x AGP) with 32 MB of video memory.
Interface with hard drives UltraATA/100. Two expansion slots, AP and BL. Actually, it’s a euphemism for that AirPort and Bluetooth are supported, but need to buy them for a fee.
The basic kit 12 inch version included a hard drive of 30 Gigabytes with a speed of 4 200 Rev/min, the set of his “senior” – 60 GB.
The optical disc drive in a cheap variant was established only one 8x Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW), expensive option you could choose between the same Combo and a 4x SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW).
12-inch version, as standard, cost $ 999, scored 630 points in Geekbench 2; 14-inch version with a clock frequency of 1.33 GHz cost 1 $ 299 (with Combo) or 1 400 (c SuperDrive), Geekbench 2 scored 727 points. 200 points less than the PowerMac G5 CPU speed to 1.6 GHz!
July 2005 or iBook G4 (Mid 2005)
Sentence am on Mac PowerPC issued, soon their will be no more sales of these Macs was bound to drop to zero… They declined but did not fall.
iBook G4, to release their successor, sold as if the transition to Intel has not been announced. Almost. And this is no coincidence: July 26, 2005 came a new model of these machines, drastically surpassing all previous.
The identifier of the model is PowerBook6,7.
The amount of RAM placed on the motherboard, has doubled to 512 Megabytes. It is possible to expand it to 1.5 GB, but 512 Megabytes you can live (it’s at 256 Mac OS X turned into frozen images).
Changed the type of memory: PC2700 DDR SDRAM.
Graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 (4X AGP) with 32 MB VRAM, resolution of 12 – and 14-inch screens of 1024×768 on the external monitor too, and lock mode extending the desktop will not go away.
First added the SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor), sensor sudden movement, which in the fall of the computer to stop the movement of the heads of the hard disk, and new gestures (scrolling with two fingers) on trackpage.
For the first time in iBook, installing AirPort Extreme, and Bluetooth was included in the cost of the basic kit, this is Bluetooth 1.1 it was Bluetooth 2.0+EDR.
A set of communication ports is the same as the previous model: the 56k modem.v92, two USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 400 port, Ethernet 10/100Base-T.
The option CPU speed 1.33 GHz front system bus 133 MHz was supplied with 8x Combo hard drive capacity of 40 Gigabytes, Geeknench 2 scored 684 points, and cost… $ 999.
In an embodiment, a processor speed of 1.42 GHz with a different bus speed 142 MHz were 4x SuperDrive, hard drive capacity of 60 GB, Geekbench 2 – 713 points, and as soon as everything is 1 $ 299.
