The end of the world on a local scale was officially declared. The countdown is enabled, and during the full life of new products has been deliberately limited. Mac and PowerPC will be supported by Apple in one, maximum two, versions of the OS, and everything. And yet, against all odds, latest PowerMac’and bought as if it was all as always…

On the Apple Press Event in new York on 19 October 2005, the new (last) PowerMac’and was presented by Phil Schiller. He called them “Quad and Dual” for the first time in Macs was used dual-core processors, and Quad-these processors had two.

PowerPC 970mp

In July 2005, the conference Power Everywhere in Tokyo, IBM announced the first in its history dual core PowerPC processor, the PowerPC 970mp, code name “Antares”. PowerPC 970, “GP-UL”, was born as a 1-2 is a derivative of nuclear-nuclear POWER4, and here.

The processor consisted of two PPC 970fx, placed on a single chip, was produced in the same 90 nm technology, was occupied twice the area. And singled in two times more heat, consuming two times more energy. In other words, at a clock frequency higher than 2.0 GHz it was heated as if it was not working the frequency, and overclocking.

16 Watts at a frequency of 1.6 GHz, 75 Watts at a frequency of 1.8 GHz, 100 Watts at a frequency of 2.0 GHz, and the farther, the sharper the power is up…

However, the processor performed the cherished desire of hundreds of thousands of professionals in all areas of digital art, greedy for performance – and Apple had to compensate for the “sagging market”.

Antares was not the primitive Union of two good waste processors on one chip: the kernel interacted if one of the cores for a long time (a few millionths of a second), it was unoccupied, it fell into suspended animation and then, if there was load – off. Reverse inclusion takes a few microseconds. This is only one of the manifestations of “collective intelligence” of the processor.

Looking ahead, I note an interesting detail: in the options “Quad and Dual” processors with a clock frequency of 2.0, 2.3 and 2.5 GHz – and only in the last of them was applied a liquid cooling system. In other cases, with radiant heat “double nuclear” processor struggled standard cooling system developed by Apple that divided the internal space of the computer 4 zone thermal control, and 9 “smart” fan control software provided in these zones at operating temperature.

A non-trivial engineering challenge that could only fanatics Apple.

To the options air cooled no complaints there. They are still working, running Mac OS 10.5.8 – but that’s another story.

The variants with the liquid cooling there were plumbing problems, not immediately after the expiration of the warranty period. Unpleasant – but “the year has been guaranteed, the year it worked (cooling) – what claims?”

When the Apple is gone, IBM has restricted the clock frequency of the PowerPC 970mp ceiling at 2.0 GHz.

Other than Apple to use the “double nuclear” semiconductor heater failed (or not tried) one.

Inside Dual and Quad

All PowerMac’Oh October 2005 were used the most risky of all RISC CPUs ever used in Macs is the PowerPC 970mp. In the most dangerous of clock frequencies.

To connect the hard drive used Serial ATA with data transfer rate of 1.5 Gbps for the optical drive – UltraATA/100. But the optical drive (again, all versions) – DL SuperDrive. DL stands for “double layer”. But the multiplicity is not so simple: different sources call this DL SD 4-fold, 16-fold, it is still somehow…

So let’s go more complicated way: this DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW reading CD 32x, CD write 24x, read DVD 20x, DVD 16x, DVD read-DL, 16x write and 4x. The unit of frequency for CD – 150 KB/s for DVD – 1.4 MB/s.

The number and type of connectors for connecting monitors depended on the installed video card. The basic set included one of the options NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (read more in the description of options), in this case, there was one connector, single-mode (Single-link) and one with dual (Dual-link). Dual-link connect 30” Apple Studio Display and his “classmates”, Single-link only worked with something simpler.

Online store base map it was possible to replace NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT (256 MB VRAM), and Quad – all on NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 with 512 MB of video memory – in these cases, support connect two 30” Apple Studio Display or “classmates”. But to work face to face with two “TV” with a 72 cm diagonal…

Quad and Dual came with Mac OS 10.4.2, with the very first version of Tiger without serious problems. And supported by all subsequent versions up to 10.5.8. Starting with Mac OS 10.6 PowerPC Mac OS X (macOS) is not supported.

Dual and Quad variants

Model PowerMac11,2 (11,1 fate is unknown to me, perhaps “2” alluding to the 2-core processors) was produced in 3 variants. Two of these (2.0 and 2.3 GHz) – Dual, with a single 2-core PowerPC 970mp, one Quad, with two 2-core processors with a clock at the extreme limit of the operating frequency of the PowerPC 970mp, 2.5 GHz, liquid cooled.

Geekbench 2 options are gaining:
Dual 2,0 – 1 814 points (DP 2,0 Early 2005 – 1 734);
Dual 2,3 – 2 082 points (DP 2,3 the beginning of the year 1 967);
Quad is 2.5 – 3 316 points (DP 2,7 – 2 259).

In the Dual 2.0 is installed in the hard disk of 160 GB (7 200 rpm), and the default NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE video memory of 128 Megabytes. Cost Dual 2.0 is only $ 1999.

For Dual 2.3 and Quad 2.5 drives 250 GB (7 200 rpm) and NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with 256 MB of video memory.

In online shop you could fill hard drives up to 500 GB both compartments.
