We heard about Apple’s plans to abandon the Intel processors in favor of its own chips in Macs. According to the authoritative analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the transition from x86 to ARM should take place in the 2020-2021 year. It is expected that the first devices that will receive branded processors, will be the MacBook and MacBook Pro, and then on the chips of own production will move all the other Apple computers. What are the drawbacks of this solution?
Currently Apple offers consumers their Mac computers with configuration capability. You can customize the processor, RAM, internal storage size to fit your needs and your wallet. But many experts believe — with the transition to the new ARM architecture, we are almost guaranteed to lose it. It may due to several reasons:
- Remember how the range of iOS devices. Never, Apple has not offered different options of processors to one and the same model of the mobile device. iPad Pro (2018) comes with Apple A12X, and the new iPhone processor, Apple A12. The only thing you can configure is the amount of internal storage. And, apparently, it is the future for Mac computers.
- At the end of October were shown the updated MacBook Air, and for the first time is only offered in one configuration with an Intel Core i5. In all likelihood, this is the first “bell”.
- This decision will undoubtedly allow you to reduce costs in the design and manufacture, and to reduce fragmentation. In theory, this approach will also allow better control of the process of development and integration with the software.
That is, it will work on a simple principle — you choose the model of your Mac and Apple will select for you the chip depending on the line, will cover different tasks.
