IP68 standard, thanks to which the iPhone XS prevents the ingress of moisture and dust, is better at diving than the iPhone XR with its IP67. This conclusion was made by journalists CNET conducted their own experiment which progressively increased the depth and the residence time of the flagship smartphone one generation under water. The result, despite its predictability, was no less interesting.
For the experiment, the journalists have used the underwater drone OpenROV is bound to XS, and iPhone iPhone XR to clearly compare their behaviour.
The first depth at which CNET tested the machines was at around 2 meters. According to the description offered by the manufacturer, the iPhone XS is able to withstand immersion to a depth of 2 meters for half an hour. Peak depth XR for iPhone, in turn, is 1 meter. Despite this, both models have passed this test within 5 minutes without the slightest hint of failure.
The second round of the suggested five-minute when the depth is equal to 3 meters. In the end, the machines felt fine, except for a muted sound from the speakers iPhone XS. iPhone XR, strangely, sounded completely pure as out of the box.
The third dive to a depth of 5 meters lasted 19 minutes. The journalists decided to raise the stakes, because, obviously, the shallow depth is a priori not able to break the protection even iPhone XR, not to mention more resistant to the forces of the elements iPhone XS. But it gave a negative result.
For iPhone XR finale occurred at a depth of 8 meters. After a couple of minutes after immersion of the smartphone brought to the screen the warning about disconnecting a SIM card, suggesting that water got into the slot, and after 4.5 minutes it blacked outpurity of experiment it was decided not to pull the device out of the water, and it is only after half an hour after the dive, to understand how longer iPhone XS. Surprisingly, the flagship stoically endured this challenge, after drying, showing complete willingness to continue to work.
