Mac Pro 2006: “Apple” Apocalypse

In 2006 WWDC (worldwide Developers Conference Apple) took place, breaking all traditions and rules, not in June and in August. The third “great transition” in the history of Apple was completed in record time, in only 210 days…

In the last part of the series about a PowerMac G5, I called the “messengers of the Apocalypse” its main characters, PowerMac G5 “Quad and Dual”. Liquid cooling system, after several years of continuous work, looked awful (like the ruins of Hiroshima), and an end to these horrors (which was expected with anxiety) was not terrible. On the contrary!

But even more interesting: the dates of the conference, from 7 to 11 August 2006.

Do everything exactly planned? Incredibly, the facts: time for the week-long conference at the Moscone West agreed in advance. Long before it began, in a typical year and how it was necessary to believe in yourself and in your power to before the first Intel Mac was released and met with consumers to prescribe it for this week in August!

If in this period someone had scheduled a private event, it will be migrated at a later date would have caused a terrible scandal that would go down in history – but all was quiet. Even if they were prepared replacement options, still: impressive.

Unreal superhuman precision planning. But submitted August 7, 2006 first ever Mac Pro, PowerMac G5 successor, overshadowed all thoughts of the past and the future. Desperately wanted to buy it.

These are no longer made…

Design becomes a masterpiece when he… almost invisible

Apparently, if you don’t look, the case has remained recognizably the same “cheese grater” on its front wall (with two holes for optical drives and a large number of slots), different arrangement and composition of elements on its back side. It’s the best thing that they could (and can) come up with: leave it as is, adding this status quo only a small appearance, but really useful changes.

Inside the design was shockingly beautiful – a space that in PowerMac G5 took a giant g-fifth and their bulky cooling system that was organized and easy to.

4 bays for hard drives. The upgrade did not require a screwdriver, and accidentally damage the computer during the upgrade we had to work hard. All slots for installing RAM (now 8) was on view, like all other parts of the computer – it should be Mac for professional use. And the best way to reduce the number of cables and peripheral devices in the workplace is to remove them in the case.

If the Mac Pro 2019 regained the look of a real Mac Pro…

A little closer to fact

That day (7 August 2006) Apple announced several important updates, but we’ll talk about them another time. The Mac Pro was the main star of this show, despite the fact that he was given only 10 minutes and 27 seconds:

Looks like Steve was “hooked” on the results of SPECint and SPECfp. It’s better than the Gigaflops of times NeXT. Much closer to the truth, and if, together with these results and reported data on “real performance of real programs.” Xcode is faster 1.8 times…

The novelty was the only basic option, configurable 4 976 640 ways. The model identifier is MacPro1,1.

In our online shop you can choose the processor (including cheaper with lower clock frequency and performance), increase the amount of RAM (from 1 GB in the basic configuration, up to 16 Gigabytes of third-party chips to 32).

Type of RAM – DDR2 PC5300 ECC (error correcting!) 667 MHz FB-DIMM.

Regardless of the modifying processors, the size of second level cache was 4 MB, and clock frequency of frontal system bus 1 333 MHz.

The basic kit included single hard drive (250 GB, SATA 3 GB/s, 7 200 rpm), three bays for drives remained unoccupied for their own costs in these compartments was possible to order disks with 500 GB, and replace the drive in the first Bay on the same.

2 Terabytes of disk space inside the case? Not true. Third-party disks with the same characteristics, but at 750 GB, came without any problems, and inside the case, if necessary, can accommodate up to 3 Terabytes.

The standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT with 256 MB of video memory it was possible to replace the ATI Radeon X1900 XT or NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500, 3D Stereo, both with 512MB of memory… If all PCI Express slots to take NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, according to Apple, the computer can connect up to 8 30-inch monitors (why?)…

In the base set of Mac Pro were not included, neither AirPort Extreme nor Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, but their support (slots). The modem is also absent, it was proposed external Apple USB modem for $ 49.

There were two independent Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000Base-T).

5 ports USB 2.0, 2 Firewire 400, 2 Firewire 800 ports.

Mac OS 10.4.7… due to the fact that the EFI (extensible firmware interface) in the MacPro1,1 was 32-bit, the maximum operating system version for her Mac OS 10.7.5.

Synthetic options

Despite the ability of nearly 5 million configuration options, we reduce them all to three, based on the modification of the processor. Easier and more familiar.

In the most basic configuration, 2 costing $ 499, used a pair of 2-core Intel Xeon 5150 processor with a clock frequency of 2.66 GHz.

Geekbench 2 (32) she gained 5190 points in Geekbench 2(64) – 5873. PowerMac G5 Quad (2.5 GHz) 3 scored 316 points.

The cheapest and the “weak” version – two pair processor 2-core Intel Xeon 5130 processor with a clock frequency of 2.0 GHz. It cost 300 dollars cheaper than a configuration with 2.66 GHz.

Geekbench 2 (32) configuration c 2.0 GHz scored 4023 points in Geekbench 2(64) – 4465.

The most powerful version was more expensive at $ 800, it used two 2-core
Intel Xeon 5160 with 3.0 GHz.

Geekbench 2 (32) configuration c 3.0 GHz scored 5,788 points in Geekbench 2(64) – 6577.
